Have you been good and saved your pennies for that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you knew would come knocking one day? If so, then your time has come.
With an absolutely stunning setting on one of the best streets in Grant Park, this circa 1870 in-town estate has been restored beyond its original grandeur with abundant historic, post-Civil-War-era features firmly intact.
Step inside after taking in the expansive front porch and you’re immediately greeted with the splendid authenticity reminiscent of days gone by: ladies parlor on the left, central hallway dead ahead, gentlemen’s parlor on the right. Original southern longleaf heart-of-pine floors, 5-panel doors, Eastlake hardware, wavy glass windows, period-appropriate fixtures and lovingly maintained pre-Victorian fireplaces greet you from every angle.
Slip to the back of the main floor and you’ll find yourself in a guest suite with its own bath and office. Opposite that, you’ll find a restaurant-quality kitchen the size of most small houses completely outfitted with Viking appliances and leading out to a second-story covered screen porch with — yes — a Viking outdoor grill. Step back inside and check out the kitchen accompaniments: a wine storage pantry with separate temperature controls for white and red, a butler’s pantry, a serving room and of course a dining room that seats 12+.
Go back to the entry foyer, sneak up the stairs from the entry foyer and you’ll find yourself in a landing-turned-library complete with mahogany bookshelves featuring intricate woodwork milled onsite to match the original fireplace mantel. Press a few of the books on the shelves and — voila! — two of the four-foot-wide shelves magically open into two secret bedrooms: one a guest suite fit for a king, the other an au-pair suite complete with its own bathroom, kitchen, sitting area and private third-floor balcony overlooking the back of the estate.
Find your way back down two flights of stairs to the entertainment space on the lower level, and just try your best to leave this space once you’ve found it: this party-cave is outfitted with a full-on wet bar, dining area, lounge room, men’s and women’s changing rooms for the pool, a steam sauna and, best of all, a meticulously constructed, all cherry-wood, temperature-controlled, oversized walk-in wine cellar.
If you can tear yourself away from this place and step through the French doors into yet another cabana-like covered porch, you’ll find that you’re now overlooking the pool area with lush landscaping, plenty of seating, a view to two gazebos and — oh yes, did I mention the pool? All around you are plenty of tinkling waterfalls, fountains and plenty of privacy plantings to give you the feeling you’re in absolute paradise.
Last but not least, there’s even a koi pond, a 4-car detached “stable” garage for all your motorized toys, a completely separate (and large) storage building, and beyond that, nearly an acre of unused green space outfitted with a few pecan and fruit trees.
