Once the hole is cut, do not dispose of the piece of board removed to make the hole, it can be used for the back part of the niche. Install a piece of lumber at the top and bottom edge of the cutout and the sides of the niche. Install your backer board on the top, bottom sides and back of the niche area and thoroughly waterproof the entire niche.
