BLAINE, Minn. — The busiest library branch in Anoka County is about to get a major facelift.
The Northtown Library in Blaine closed its doors Monday to prepare for the million dollar make-over. Workers are currently in the process of packing up all of the library materials before the remodeling work begins.
Before the story of the 2014 renovations start at the Anoka County Library’s Northtown location, the branch staff at the library have to write the chapter they call – the big move.
“What we’re doing right now is measuring and tagging the books,” said Ruth Hemingson, the branch librarian. “So I think it’s going to take three to five days,”
Becky Walpole was one of the library assistants who had string and tags in hand. “We have string measured to accommodate a certain number of books on a shelf,” said Walpole.
The story will continue when a moving company takes all 185,000 items in the collection, on carts, to an Anoka County storage site.
“We’ll look at the cart, know the numbers that are on it and know their place in the remodeled facility,” said Hemingson.
Melanie Keister is one of the Anoka County Library board members who came out on Wednesday morning for a cerimonial closing of the building. “The library as you see it – gone,” said Keister.
County commissioners joined Keister and others, who collaborated on the plans, to stop for a moment, to mark this passage in the building’s history. The library director Marlene Moulton Janssen thanked the staff for their work.
“This project would not have happened without the dedication that you provide,”
Bookshelves will be lowered for improved sight lines. Amy Hennen is a library voluteer and patron who looks forward to an improved book return.
“A drive-up, drop-off area will be wonderful,” Hennen said, “Because I have definitely been one of those people that get out and trot through the snow.”
“It’s going to have that central desk that, people won’t have to go hunting for the reference desk around the corner,” Hemingson said.
As you step in the main entrance the hallway will be widened to give the library a more open feel. It will be much brighter with a new glass wall installed to separate the children’s area. All the bookshelves will be lowered and turned sideways, in the children’s section, to allow more natural light to come through the windows.
Julie Braastad is the Anoka County Commissioner and the liaison to the library board. She said that once renovations wrap-up, more computers will be added, aolong with better internet service for patrons.
“For those that come in with their own laptops or iPads we’re going to have desks where they can plug right in and don’t have to worry about batteries running out.”
It will be a brand new chapter in library services for Anoka County. Construction is expected to start on March 31st. The renovations should be completed by the end of June.
