If you’ve been to the grocery store lately, you might have noticed a few items have disappeared from the shelves. At least 13 products have been recalled in the last two weeks and eight of them are peanut related.
You might remember a few weeks ago when Trader Joe’s Valencia Peanut Butter was recalled due to a salmonella outbreak. Most of the products recalled recently trickle down from that previous recall.
Eddie Owens, director of communications at United Supermarkets, says there’s no question this is the biggest recall he’s seen at one time. All products are considered a level-one recall which means they can potentially jeopardize the safety and health of people.
“I don’t know that salmonella has been found in anything right now,” Owens says. “But because of the salmonella found in the peanut butter earlier, I think the manufacturers have issued the product recall because that product was used in it.”
Owens says two varieties of Kellogg’s Frosted Mini-Wheats have also been recalled due to the possibility of metal shavings in the cereal. “Apparently there was a defective machine that is used to manufacture that product, and there was the possibility of metal shavings in those two items,” Owens said.
Also on the recall list were two varieties of popcorn due to the risk of Listeria, and Natural Vines Black Licorice because of possible lead contamination. However, Owens says that all products on their store shelves now are safe and the recalled products have been pulled.
The recall products have specific barcode numbers and date codes. That is how you can determine if the product you bought is potentially dangerous. If you have one of those items you can take it back to any United store for a full refund even if the package has already been opened.
We are still waiting to hear back if other grocery stores have removed the recalled items.
