DIY Project: How to build and install garage storage with enclosed shelving,
We had just moved into a new home and
the first thing we needed to do was install
some garage storage.
We went to our local hardware store,
picked up straight support beams for the
uprights and the shelf supports for front and rear.
We also picked up shelf lumber. Piled it
all in the car and we brought it home.
Once we got home we had to unload it
and make sure we had all the pieces ready for
our garage storage project.
This video is a description
of how we actually put the garage storage
together.
The first we needed to do was
provide the rear supports for our shelves.
We wanted 16 foot shelves, so we ended
up drawing a straight line 16 foot long and
installed the rear supports first by
screwing them into the studs.
Then we added the front supports so that
the fronts and rear shelf supports
perfectly lined up.
The next step is to be install the uprights for our shelving.
And that was an easy task. All we had to
do was make sure it was straight and upright again.
And every 4 feet we installed front support beams.
You do have to worry about cutting your
uprights so that the match across the top.
You have to measure the distance from the top support and
mark it across. And then you have to
make some cuts.
The other real big issue is; at the other
end.
If you have a sloped floor you will have to
make some angle cuts, because the top shelf will be
higher at front of the garage than at the back of the garage.
So the next thing to do is to measure,
mark, and cut all the uprights so that they
align with the top of the top shelf support beam.
Once it’s done is you’ll have a nice flush
level top all the way across.
Next step is to spread the supports and put install all of the
the shelf tops. For this project I will glue and nail
the shelf tops.
Just a reminder: the reason you want to cut the
front supports from the top and make sure
you measure it correctly, is because otherwise
you will have an un-level shelf at the top.
“And that’s bad”
I added braces to support the shelves. The brace I used is
a “Simpson Joist Hanger”. I added three braces for this project.
Note: you can get these braces at most large box Hardware Stores.
The braces provide a little more reinforcement.
After installation; you actually lay down or stand on
your shelves.
So the shelving is constructed at this
point.
It’s 16 feet long and put material in it and
roll it all the way down it’s fully open shelf surface.
ADDING DOORS TO ENCLOSE YOUR SHELVING
We decided to add doors to enclose our shelving.
We added two doors on each of the
sections.
Putting three hinges on each of the
doors.
We marked the doors so that they are
equi-distant from the top and from the bottom.
With one hinge in the center.
If you follow the same process for each
of the doors you be able to easily install
straight even parallel doors to enclose
your garage shelving..
